<itunes:summary>All mixes are all vinyl, recorded live from two turntables.

Irregularly (but consistently!) posting themed mixes ranging from funk, soul and reggae to folk, rock and experimental music.

Each mix is usually about an hour and I'm going to try and include notes, relevant information and thoughts about the tracks featured in the mix. There's no 'hosting' or 'talking' during the mix, just the songs.

Enjoy!</itunes:summary>

<img src="http://musicalepisode.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/1169412/0x0_2308824.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />Back after a long unintended break due to a total PC crash and the learning curve of dealing with a mac laptop (still don't like it!) Pretty psyched about this podcast too, been meaning to do one of these for some time now. Almost all instrumental! Only one track with vocals proper ("Soulin' and Rollin'") and a bunch with some shouts and background yelling (something i wish more songs had!).

Hope you enjoy this musical episode, it's a boatload of awesome tracks- most are pretty upbeat soul or R&B groovers, some are outright rowdy brawling drum offs and a couple are some pretty heavy platters of gooey nasty funk.

All are 45s and the listings go: Artist : Song (Label)

Booker T and The MG's : Slim Jenkin's Place (Stax)
The Moon People : Hippy, Skippy, Moon Strut (opus #1) (Roulette)
Johnny Jones and The King Casuals : Soul Poppin' (Brunswick)

Pulled out a pile of LPs with a loose theme and started to realize A LOT of the tracks i wanted to play were really really long and as I thought about that, it seemed more appropriate that if I'm drawing on full length releases, i may as well take advantage of songs that could never even fit on a 45. Hope you enjoy, lots of really heavy tunes on this one. Heads up for the little / public listeners, on the mayfield joint he drops an N Bomb, but it couldn't be more amazing!

There were a couple of mixing fudge-ups due to a testy turntable, they shouldn't be too noticeable except the beginning of the Orlons track, which comes in a little too abruptly. Otherwise, a batch of tunes i quite enjoy and hope you do too! Just realized there are a few duplicates from other podcasts, sorry (they're just that good!)

As always, all vinyl and this batch as is usually the case are all 45s.

Listing is Artist / Track / Label

Due to the panic surrounding Swine Flu (and a confirmed case at the hosting university) the event was canceled. Needless to say I was disappointed. Most of these records were pulled for that event, though I stray considerably from the path I would have taken and include a number of records I wouldn't have played I still tried to keep in mind a Triceratops lurking somewhere beyond the chatter and snack tables.

For the record, these are mostly from LPs, the last three tracks are from 45s.

Dorothy Ashby : Back Talk (from the Prestige LP Hip Harp)
Dave Brubeck Quartet : Take Five (from the Columbia LP Time Out)
Chico Hamilton : A Trip (from the Impulse LP The Dealer)
Charles Mingus : Fables of Faubus (from the Columbia LP "Mingus Ah Um")
Milt Jackson : Stuffy (from the Atlantic LP The Art of Milt Jackson)
Jimmy McGriff & Groove Holmes : How High The Moon (from the Groove Merchant LP Come Together)
Eddie Harris : Instant Death (From the Atlantic LP Instant Death)
Charles Kynard : Hot Sauce (From the Mainstream LP Woga)
Bennie Green : Soul Stirrin' (Blue Note 45)
Groove Holmes : Groove's Groove (Prestige 45)
Count Basie & The Kansas City 7 : Count's Place (Impulse 45)

Bring Em On Back

<img src="http://musicalepisode.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/1169412/0x0_1772027.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />Here's another hour of 45's. A lot of favorites in here, a couple tracks that are new to me and of course there seems to always be a red heron, in this case the jewel akens track, doesn't totally jive with the rest of the batch but doesn't stink up the joint. a good track but maybe would fit in better in another mix, kind of like spaghetti sauce on cereal. The Lou Rawls track won't leave my head for a hundred reasons, his voice is so rich without being otis intense or marvin mellow, falls into a beautiful little listening cove where i just wade and take it in, hope it has the same effect on you. Enjoy the mix. Got a bunch more in the tubes, super heavy funk 45s, instrumental (mostly organ, some jazz) 45s, a 'world' music edition and a two volume early 90's hip hop session with my spinning partner Dj Cashman. Alright, enjoy!

<itunes:summary>Here's another hour of 45's.
<img src="http://musicalepisode.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/1169412/0x0_1709080.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />Another podcast of heavy hitting 45s. Loosely themed these jams around love (usually in the pejorative) though there are a few truly uplifting moments. A couple of these singles are a little scratchy but nothing too grating and there are few moments of loud mixing, my apologies, i was using a backup mixer that's a bit temperamental.

A couple of pretty obvious tracks on here, the bill withers sticking out as maybe the most likely candidate for 'just heard it on the radio' but that doesn't mean it's excluding from also being listed as 'the most heartbreaking of all.' Ultra heavy track. The Jan Bradley tune is also pretty huge but i've always had a soft spot for that song and it was only recently while poring over the label info did i notice that it was written by Curtis Mayfield which only further enamored me to the song.

Menahan Street Band is flagged too; being the only instrumental AND the only track produced after the 1970's. Still a deep burner that gets me every time.

The last two tracks, syl johnson and aaron neville are a particularly intense two-some, hope it's not too deep and dark of a note to leave the podcast on.

That being said, enjoy the tracks, hope they reaffirm yr feelings of love or console yr feelings of heartbreak.

<img src="http://musicalepisode.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/1169412/0x0_1652270.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />This podcast is a collection of a bunch of the 45s I got while on tour from New England, through the Mid-West, down to Miami and back up the East Coast. I think most of these records are from a stop in Columbus, OH, Lexington, KY and Philadelphia, PA. Actually, didn't do much shopping beyond those places (unfortunately.)

That being said, there are a bunch of things i left off of here, a few gospel records, some jazz singles and a handful of other soul and funk records. The tracks that made it on here vary pretty wildly in style, region, years and production value but they're all pretty high quality tunes that pull at different heart (and brain) strings to get yr attention and appreciation.

Brook Benton - Rainy Night in Georgia (Cotillion)
Wes Montgomery - Goin Out of My Head (Verve)
Dionne Warwick - Do You Know The Way To San Jose (Scepter)
JOI - Spring Fever Part 1 (Beverly Hills)
Shirley Brown - Yes Sir Brother (Truth)
Bobby Womack - Woman's Gotta Have It (United Artists)
Moments - Sexy Mama (Stang)
The Pointer Sisters - Yes We Can Can (Blue Thumb)
The Sunshine Band - Black Water Gold (Tk Records)
George MacCrae - Rock Your Baby (Tk Records)
The Packers - Go 'Head On (Pure Soul Music)
Mar-Keys - Philly Dog (Stax)
Oscar Toney Jr. - Ain't That True Love (Bell)
Marvin Gaye - Can I Get A Witness (Tamla)
Tommy Tucker - High Heel Sneakers (Checker)
William Bell - The Man In The Street (Stax)
The Dells - There Is (Chess)
Jr. Walker & The All Stars - Shake and Fingerpop (Soul)
Dr Feelgood & The Interns - Lets Have A Good Time Tonight (Okeh)
Jackie Lee - The Duck (Mirwood)
Al Wilson - Show and Tell (Rocky Road Records)
Doris Duke - To The Other Woman (Canyon Records)
Brenda Russell - You're Free (Horizon)

<itunes:summary>This podcast is a collection of a bunch of the 45s I got while on tour from New England, through the Mid-West, down to Miami and back up the East Coast.
